The city’s 11 vibrant parks and water access to the Maumee River make for all kinds of adventures. Visit Riverside Park, which was renovated approximately 20 years ago thanks to a cooperative effort among the Girl Scouts of Maumee Valley, Perrysburg Garden Club and the City of Perrysburg. The park is known for its upper-level benches and artistic canopy chairs for relaxing beside the water and taking in scenic views. Those views include the water, of course, but also a truly arresting steel art installation called Against the Wind, a series of 12 airplane sculptures that move to look like they are in flight. The planes each weigh in around 300 pounds and make for a unique selfie backdrop. Explore the park on foot or rent a ParBike, locally crafted four-wheeler bikes that let you ride side-by-side with a friend. It’s a fun way to socialize and be active. Don’t want your ride to come to an end? You can even buy your very own custom-made ParBike.
Find out where Perrysburg got its name at Hood Park, home to the Perrysburg War Memorial, as well as an impressive bronze statue of the city’s namesake, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry. You can also launch or dock at the park’s Louisiana Avenue Boat Dock and get a gorgeous view of nearby Audubon Island.
Play a round of disc golf at Woodlands Park, which has an 18-hole public course. The kids will also love the park’s aptly named Fort Imagination playground, which is being completely renovated Spring 2023. Also, enjoy the self-guided Perrysburg Sculpture Walk, and be sure to download the Otocast app, which provides an e-docent tour of the 16 sculptures, narrated by the artists themselves.
Spend a day at play at Rotary Community Park, complete with an all-inclusive, 13,000-square-foot playground for children of all abilities, including those with sensory and accessibility issues. The park also features a roomy shelter house available for parties and gatherings, as well as new pickleball courts.
Perrysburg makes the most of its proximity to the water with three public access points to launch your kayak, go fishing, boating, or jet skiing. Drop into the Maumee River at Maple Street Boat Launch, Louisiana Avenue Boat Dock and Orleans Park Boat Launch.
Stroll through the city’s charming historic district to find local shopping and dining among the mixed-use area’s businesses and city offices. Be on the lookout for signage that tells the local history as you stroll. The easily walkable Historic District is a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), which allows visitors to walk through the area while enjoying alcoholic beverages. One of the best times to explore is during the weekly Visit Perrysburg Market Days event that’s 4.5 blocks long with 19 food trucks, more than 65 vendors and live music. Held May through September, it’s a festival atmosphere every Thursday. Come again Fridays for a free classic car show.
Find more shops and restaurants at Levis Commons, boasting 82 businesses ranging from mom-and-pop stores to the world headquarters of Owens International (O-I) Glass, whose sleek building won a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Award for its green architecture. Like the Historic District, Levis Commons has a DORA, and you’ll find lots of entertainment there too, including a theater, a comedy club and DraftCade, an arcade with old-school pinball, skee-ball, video games and draft beer galore.
Learn more about Perrysburg’s rich history at Fort Meigs, the largest reconstructed wooden fort on the continent. Fort Meigs was instrumental in winning the War of 1812, as it held off further British invasions into Ohio and helped secure the Great Lakes Region into U.S. control. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory during the Battle of Lake Erie was enabled by the invasions prevented by Fort Meigs. Stroll the grounds, which are open April through November to the public, and gain a deeper understanding with a tour that includes the adjacent museum and visitors center, which holds soldiers’ letters, diaries, uniforms and weapons.
The 577 Foundation is a gathering place for Perrysburg residents and visitors alike. This historic property at 577 E. Front Street is perhaps the best example of community in the city. You’ll find pottery classes, fiber arts and studio classes here, along with health and wellness programs, a community garden, geodesic biodome and monthly meetings on revolving topics like journaling, cooking and music. The free Music in the Garden concerts offer a chance for people to listen to live, local music while enjoying the great outdoors.
